Architecture

Different from most projects we develop, we came to this project with the exterior architecture fully conceived and with site plan approval in place. We compliment Bill Hicks and his team for the strength of their design vision, their efforts with local stakeholders to secure approvals, and their on-going collaboration with our team.

ARCHITECT’S STATEMENT

The original design concept was inspired by perhaps the brownstones of New York and other great cities where the streetscape is enriched by a façade that provides some rhythm on the street with some variety of architectural detail to enrich the experience of walking by the homes.

The development addresses the lower scale of the homes on Allan Street by providing a façade on that street that looks and feels like one of the other residential homes that form part of the context in which the development is found.

At street level each individual unit has a private street level garden that further enhances the sense of entry into both the private units and the common entry lobbies.

The entry lobbies themselves have been split into four different entry points thus providing a greater sense of privacy for each grouping of units.

The unique aspect of this development is that while it reads as a series of vertical townhomes it actually functions as a series of one-floor flats, thus offering a living experience without stairs, and with private terraces, increased unit widths and private access to individual units.

The use of limestone and brick on the façade with richly detailed moulding and crowns and cornices presents a richness at the street level that sets this development apart from others.

Its location within a strong and identifiable residential neighbourhood sets this apart from the more urban settings found in the centre of the Olde Oakville village which have limited views of greenspace.
